Our living rooms are generally the central part of our homes and the primary space for friends and family to gather. They should be welcoming and comfortable but also be a reflection of our preferred design style.

Although Australia has a relatively mild winter, every time the season rolls around we are met with chilly enough days that require layering up. Having a fireplace to get toasty next to is the dream, but for those who don't have one, adding layers to your living room design can offer plenty of relief be it via throws, rugs, or plush cushions. Swathing this space in warm tones too can also help create a more cosy vibe.

To help inspire you to cosy up your living room this winter, we have rounded up a selection of fabulous living areas that look extra snuggly and stylish.

1. Spanish glow

Every space in this home is worthy of a feature in any high-end home magazine, but the living room, which is owner Emma Lane's favourite, is the showstopper. In this open-plan space a large stone fireplace sits in front of a spectacular conversation pit which is positioned to take advantage of the sweeping Byron Bay Hinterland views. It's nothing short of spectacular.

2. Warm hues

In Dani Dean's welcoming living room you are greeted with a bevy of warm tones including Turmeric and Terracotta. A fluffy rug, timber furnishings, and an upholstered sofa enhance the cosy vibe and make it an ideal spot to get comfortable on cooler days.

3. Desert magic

With an antique pine credenza, huge open windows, and soft natural textures, the living room in Arro Dunes, a rental home in Joshua Tree, is layered with old and new objects and invites the outside in.

4. '60s glow

This cosy nook sits within a 1960's home in Torquay. Surrounded by lush greenery and a creek, this home feels welcoming inside thanks to warm timber cladding and a wood burning fireplace in the living area.

5. Neutral haven

Our Terracotta throw makes for a perfectly soft and cosy layer to add to your sofa in the cooler months. Here, in stylist Sarah Pickersgill-Brown's light-flooded abode, she has designed it with warming wood tones and layered it with textural contrasts. The spacious open-plan dining and living room is a serene space fitted with blush and neutral shades, which complement the rays of sunshine beaming through floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains.

6. Chic moment

As with her arrangements, florist Mikarla Bauer's beautiful Bangalow home in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales is thoughtfully designed and understatedly elegant. Muted tones of soft pink and beige flow through the space, whilst blooms burst from an enviable collection of ceramic vessels in every room.

7. Country charm

This lovingly restored historic cottage in the heart of Dubbo in western New South Wales has cosy country vibes aplenty. With its fireplace, layers, and upholstered furniture it's the perfect spot to snuggle up to on cooler days.
