9 Ways to Makeover Your Bedroom for the Cooler Months
Make your sleep sanctuary more warm and inviting for the chilly season.
During the cooler months, most of us spend more time in our bedrooms. The days are shorter and colder, we sleep more, and we're heading outdoors less. And while this may seem depressing, getting all cosy and comfortable in a freshly decorated room can absolutely boost your mood!
From adding natural elements to refreshing your bed with a more wintery colour combination, here are nine ways you can give your bedroom a makeover to get you through the cooler months.
1. Refresh your bedding
First things first. During winter, most of us layer quilts and blankets on our beds until we emulate a human burrito. But have you ever woken up clammy in the middle of the night courtesy of all those layers? Keeping toasty doesn't mean ending up covered in sweat – and this is where linen comes in. Linen is an extremely breathable fabric, making it great for both top and bottom sheets. By throwing a doona or blanket on top, you'll stay snug but perspiration-free.
If you're someone who easily feels the cold, consider a duvet insert and a quilted bed cover for added warmth and insulation. Additionally, consider keeping creature comforts like slippers and a cosy robe on hand for the morning.

2. Opt for warm lighting
If your lights currently have bulbs that omit cool light, now is the perfect time to switch them out for something warmer. This will help bring the cosy vibes to your space. Anything within the 2700K-3000K range will help promote relaxation.
4. Light a candle
Candles emit a warm glow that's perfect for the darker days and will easily transform the ambience of a space. Opt for scents that help create a cocooning vibe in your home, and assist you in feeling a sense of calm before bed.
5. Add natural elements
When you're spending less time out and about, it's nice to have some nature in your home to promote well-being and comfort. This could mean an indoor plant, woven baskets, or fresh flowers.
Accents of wood are also a great way to warm up the aesthetic of a room.
6. Introduce more texture
A variety of textures on walls and surfaces will help to soften a room and draw you in. Lay down a plush rug, hang a wall tapestry, place a faux fur rug on an armchair or a throw over your bed. By bringing more textured elements to your space, you'll add dimension and warmth.
7. Switch over your curtains
Heavier drapes are perfect for insulating your room when the temperature drops and will help to create a cocooning effect in your space. The best kinds are blockout curtains and triple weave curtains.
8. Lay down a proper rug
If you have wood or tiled flooring, a cosy rug is essential. Not only does it tie the design together, but rugs also make a space feel cosy and lived in (as opposed to unfinished and cold). This is an especially important consideration in a bedroom — who wants to wake up and step onto freezing cold tile first thing in the morning?
No matter what style you choose, make sure you select the right size – at the very least, the bottom two legs of your bed frame should sit comfortably on the rug. If you really want to cosy up the space, invest in an even larger rug that sits below your entire bed and nightstands.
9. Consolidate your wardrobe
If your wardrobe is in your bedroom, start thinking about which items of clothing you’ll start to wear less as the weather changes. Shorts and skirts can most likely be put away, and any clothing for cooler weather such as coats can come out of storage and be hung up.
