Places & Spaces: Bondi's Favourite Mexican Eatery Is Packed With Interior Inspiration
If the words jalapeño kombucha and choc-chilli brownie get you excited, you'll want to keep reading. Designed by one of our favourite local design offices Studio Esteta (who are also responsible for this Melbourne Deli), Fonda's one and only Sydney location has become a cult favourite amongst Bondi's locals. Positioned only footsteps from iconic Bondi Beach, this modern Mexican eatery is the ultimate place to retreat to after a long day by the sea. Not only is their menu filled with the freshest and tastiest dishes you could image, but the beautiful interior design alone is enough of a reason to travel for. The bright and youthful restaurant is ideal for a quick lunch or a longer weekend get together with a pitcher of sangria or a boozy aguas frescas.
This vibrant Mexican eatery looks like it should be on the cover of an international design mag and we're obsessed with the way it looks. There's personality in spades in this seaside fonda—a term used to describe a small, family-run restaurant in Mexico. Everything from the floors to the walls has been given a refined yet raw treatment to blend these two cultures together. Studio Esteta has used texture, pattern and colour to evoke a casual and fun atmosphere here where bubbly staff help to make you feel warm and welcome. Given its iconic Sydney location, pale blue walls have been rendered for a textured effect that sits so nicely against custom tan leather banquets. Pale pinks, rich navy and deep ochre reds round out the considered palette. Handmade encaustic tiles are paired with contemporary terrazzo and bohemian woven pendants for a look that's native and brand new at the same time. You can see the influence of Mexican architect Luis Barragán throughout, especially when you look up to discover sleek archways juxtaposed with rigid lines on custom joinery and furniture.
On top of the delectable dishes we've already mentioned, Fonda Bondi has a sizeable menu that is sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. From tacos to burritos to salads and more, you'll want to return regularly to test their entire food offering out. Having frequented this Bondi favourite many times, I can attest to the mouthwatering flavours and crunchy textures that make this place a future icon of the Bondi strip. Their house-made sodas are the perfect accompaniment to your meal, and you can even add a dash of your favourite spirit if you're looking to wind down while you watch locals and visitors stroll by. In summer, try to snag one of their alfresco tables for prime people watching and glimpses down to the sandy shore beyond.
