The 9 TV Shows You Don't Want to Miss in January

Happy New Year! And happy new year of television. We’re in luck because we have a huge one ahead of us, full of all things exciting: Blockbuster Netflix series, thrilling reboots (Gossip Girl, anyone?), superhero franchises on Disney+ and plenty of local content on Stan, too.

The first month of the year always tends to be a quiet one, dominated by big sporting events. But with the Australian Open being pushed back until February, it has given us a bit of space for a few stellar television shows to launch. In fact, we think this might be the best January in television in recent memory. So what will you all be watching this month?

Bump

When can I watch it? 1 January on Stan.

Created by the team who made Love My Way, this Stan original series is a lovely, warm comedy starring Claudia Karvan, Angus Sampson and newcomer Nathalie Morris. The premise is simple: what happens if you’re an ambitious and high-achieving high schooler, who somehow has a surprise baby? Set in inner Sydney, and with all the clever comedy of films like Juno or Saved, this show is going to be a hit.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 2

When can I watch it? 6 January on Stan.

From super producer Paul Feig – the man behind Bridesmaids and Spy – comes the second season of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, a super charming musical comedy series about a San Francisco computer coder who wakes up with the ability to hear everyone’s inner monologue – conveyed through song. It’s zany and silly and a whole lot of fun, with a cast that includes Peter Gallagher, Lauren Graham and Mary Steenburgen. A summer holiday delight.

Lupin

When can I watch it? 8 January on Netflix.

Arsene Lupin is a classic French tale that follows a gentleman thief (and master of disguise) through his various thrilling hijinks. First conceived in 1905, it has had several iterations since then, including this brand spanking new one, a lavish Netflix original that’s part of the platform’s big push into French original content. Starring Omar Sy in the lead role, this reimagining of a classic tale looks exciting, inclusive and sexy as hell.

Dickinson Season 2

When can I watch it? 8 January on AppleTV+.

We’ve often said it, but Dickinson is one of the best shows on television right now. It’s criminally under-watched, but it’s a must-see for anyone who loves smart period dramas and historical biopics. Technically, it’s a look at the life of a young Emily Dickinson (Hailee Steinfeld) and her family in Amherst, as the poet tries to figure out what she wants to do with her life. But this comedy is so much more than that, using modern tone, vernacular and jokes to help give audiences a sense of who the Dickinsons really are – which is much closer to us than you might think. The first season is available to watch on AppleTV+ now ahead of the second season’s launch. Get on it!

Servant Season 2

When can I watch it? 15 January on AppleTV+.

If horror is more your thing, AppleTV+ has another big series return in January: the M Night Shyamalan thriller Servant. This one is properly creepy, a scary story of a nanny drafted in to look after a grieving family’s very lifelike doll, which stands in for a baby. But as the first season showed, all is not what it seems in this house. The second season will undoubtedly prove to be as terrifying as the first. Watch it with the lights turned up extra, extra high.

WandaVision

When can I watch it? 15 January on Disney+.

15 January is proving to be a big day for television, with Disney+ unveiling WandaVision, it’s very first Marvel TV show. Starring Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany’s Vision, it’s a genre-bending, mind-twisting, head-scratching show whose plot is being kept tightly under wraps. Trailers suggest that it might have a time travel element, or even be set in an alternative universe – but could they be playing tricks on us? All we know is that the show will follow these fan favourite star-crossed superheroes as they try to make their private (and public) lives work. We’re sold.

Riverdale Season 5

When can I watch it? 21 January on Netflix.

Everyone’s favourite sexy YA show is back for a fifth season – seriously, can you believe it? – with new episodes dropping weekly on Netflix from 21 January. If you’re already a fan, you know the drill: Archie and the gang are just trying to get through high school, while navigating mysteries in Riverdale. The whole cast, including stars KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse and Camilla Mendes, are back and ready for the new season.

Walker

When can I watch it? 22 January on Stan.

Are there any Gilmore Girls fans in the building? Because Jared Padalecki – yes, Dean himself – has a brand new TV show. It’s called Walker, a reboot of the iconic Walker Texas Ranger television show, and follows Padalecki’s character Texas Ranger Cordell Walker as he tries to settle back into life in Austin after two years undercover. It’s action-packed and gritty and a bit of a whodunnit.

Euphoria Special Episode 2

When can I watch it? 25 January on Binge

The first of two Euphoria special episodes dropped in December, and now in January there’ll be a second, ready for you to watch on Binge. Once again, the plot is being kept top secret. But we do know that it will focus on the character of Jules (Hunter Schafer) looking back on the past year at Christmas, and is called ‘F*ck Anyone Who’s Not A Sea Blob’. We’re excited already.
