It's cold, it's miserable, just the thought of going outside is enough to send a shiver down your spine. Welcome to winter, and all of the frosty fun that comes with it.

While staying inside might seem like a mundane task, it can be made all the more fun when you've got something you look forward to watching on TV.

From reliable classics to new binge-worthy releases, we've rounded up the best thrilling shows to keep you glued to the couch and tucked under a blanket – where else would you want to be anyway?

1. The Killing

Where can I watch it? Disney+

This addictive winter watch is based on the Danish television series Forbrydelsen, and centres around the events that occur after the brutal murder of 17-year-old Rosie Larsen. While a widespread police investigation takes place, her family left to deal with the unexpected loss of their child. Leaving no stone unturned as they try to find the suspect, detectives discover clues which lead them to Seattle, where the electorate for mayor hides a chilling truth which could unlock the mystery behind Rosie’s murder.

2. Blue Lights

You can never go wrong with a police drama, and Belfast-based drama Blue Lights has raised our standards tenfold. Following new police recruits Grace, Annie, and Tommy, as they learn the ropes in a high-pressure environment. From criminal gangs, to divided communities, they struggle with knowing who to trust, all while pondering if they’re cut out for this line of work. Make yourself comfortable with a throw and hot cup of tea, because once you press play, you'll be seated for a while.

3. True Detective: Night Country

Where can I watch it? Binge

Season 4 of the anthology crime thriller True Detective, Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) prove the ultimate pair as they investigate the disappearance of eight men who go missing without a trace from the Alaskan town of Ennis, where small town suspense meets classic crime drama. Suspenseful and thrilling, True Detective: Night Country is worth cancelling any and all plans for.

4. Fargo

Based on the 1996 film of the same name, American reality-based crime drama television series Fargo recounts the various chronicles of deception, intrigue, and murder in and around frozen Minnesota. With a brisk setting to match what we're currently experiencing, watch as each season introduces new plots and characters who all mysteriously lead back one way or another to frosty Fargo, North Dakota.

5. Ozark

Starring Jason Bateman as Marty Byrde, a financial planner who relocates his family to the Ozarks after a money-laundering scheme for a Mexican drug cartel goes wrong. To appease the cartel and protect his family, Marty proposes to set up a larger laundering operation for the cartel, leading the entire family to become deeply involved in the criminal enterprise. While it may be set over balmy summers in the Ozark Region, the tension and suspense that unfolds over it’s four seasons will send chills to match the weather outside throughout your body.

6. Under the Bridge

Where can I watch it? Disney+

Based on Rebecca Godfrey's book of the same name, miniseries Under the Bridge tells the true story of 14-year-old Reena Virk, who went to join friends at a party in 1997 and never returned home. Her disappearance intrigues writer Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough) who returns to her hometown to further investigate the alleged murder. This an emotional watch so be prepared to use your blanket as both a comforter and a tissue.

7. Mare of Easttown

Where can I watch it? Binge

Receiving critical acclaim for its writing, direction, and performances – particularly that of Kate Winslet’s portrayal of Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective who investigates a local murder while trying to keep her own life from falling apart. Over seven episodes Mare grapples with her troubled past, while trying to navigate the challenges of both her professional and personal life. Seriously addictive and compelling, exactly what you want on a glacial evening spent on the couch.

8. Ripley

Where can I watch it? Netflix

In real life he goes by Andrew Scott, but to all those who Fleabag, he will forever be 'Hot Priest'. In this Netflix psychological thriller though, he goes by Tom Ripley, a New Yorker hired to convince a wealthy Italian’s son to return home. But, as we all know, The Talented Mr. Ripley doesn’t always play by the rules. Also starring Johnny Flynn and Dakota Fanning, this eight-episode series will keep you glued to the couch, far away from the bitter cold that looms outside.

9. Presumed Innocent

Where can I watch it? Apple TV+

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as attorney Rusty Sabich in the latest adaptation of the much-loved legal thriller, alongside a cast that includes Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, and Renate Reinsve (AKA Julie from The Worst Person in the World). Gripping and full of turns, Presumed Innocent is perfect for a chilly winter evening cosied up on the couch.

10. Lady in the Lake

Where can I watch it? Apple TV+

Set in 1966, Lady in the Lake tells the gripping tale of a young girl’s disappearance on Thanksgiving, and how the lives of two women – Maddie Schwartz (Portman) and Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) – become dangerously intertwined. Perfect winter streaming – we think yes.
