Samantha Hyatt’s Los Angeles Home Is a Lesson in California Cool

The Poosh leader’s renovated family home in LA’s Brentwood is equal parts laidback and chic.

Welcome to The Makers. Each week, we’re celebrating innovators, artisans, and crafters of all types, taking you on a private tour of their creative spaces. For this installment, we tour the Vice President of Ad Sales at Poosh, Sam Hyatt's laidback luxe home in Brentwood, Los Angeles.

As someone who works for a company that serves as a one-stop-shop for discovering new brands, products, and treatments before everyone is talking about them, it's hardly surprising that Samantha Hyatt has an ultra-stylish home. As the Vice President of Ad Sales at Poosh, she's part of a team of tastemakers and she's fed her own personal style preferences into her dreamy Los Angeles residence.

Sam studied at UCLA before beginning her career as an assistant to the Director of Sales for FHM Magazine. Since then she's worked for the likes of Netflix, Comcast, and NBC Universal in account executive roles. Fast forward to now, and Sam is experiencing the highlight of her career working at Poosh – a lifestyle website and brand founded by Kourtney Kardashian in 2019. "I’ve loved all the phases of my career but I really love where I am at now working with two of my oldest best friends, Kourtney and our Chief Content Officer, Sarah Howard, and building a team," she shares with Bed Threads Journal.

The Poosh brand shares everything from healthy recipes to style tips, aiming to inspire others to embrace a modern lifestyle. "Modern lifestyle for me and Poosh is living a healthy life of balance and still enjoying yourself and having fun," Sam explains. It’s a curated guide to living your best modern, healthy life, edited by those in the know and has garnered 4.8 million followers on Instagram.

Each year, the team picks a selection of products that they deem are the perfect holiday gifts. For the latest 2022 Poosh Holiday Mailer, they have included one of Bed Threads' signature Bedding Sets in buttery Terracotta. And it's a tone that flows throughout Sam's home.

Sam has lived in her current home for the last 11 years with her husband, and did a full internal remodel in 2021. Now, the home embraces the classic Californian design aesthetic with a modern edge, leaning towards the natural, free-spirited side. "I wanted to create a place where all my friends, and my three kids, and my kid’s friends all want to spend time at that was great for entertaining and chic and cool but also inviting," she explains. Throughout the home, original pieces like handwoven baskets and one-off ceramics result in a collected, curated look. This is particularly evident in the living area which also embraces warm, natural wooden elements.

Given the home is located in the Golden State, it makes sense that light fabrics such as pure linen have been chosen for furniture and homewares to keep things feeling nice and fresh. In the primary bedroom, Sam has opted for Olive Stripe, Terracotta, and Oatmeal linen – a combination that's earthy and calming and perfectly ties in with the colour palette of the rest of the home.

Below, take a tour of Sam's family home and read about her favourite pieces within and the most crucial tool she's used to further her career.

Hi Sam! This series is called The Makers. What is it that you make?

I make creative partnerships come to life for Poosh leading up our sales and marketing team as the Vice President of Ad Sales.

How does the act of “making” relate to your personality and who you are?

I just think that working in sales is really geared towards a specific personality type. I am just generally more outspoken, easy to talk to, and not shy outside of work, and that kind of personality lends well in the workplace as well as to what we do in sales.

Tell us about your career journey to date. Did you always know you wanted to pursue this line of work?

I first started my career in my very early 20s working as an assistant to the Director of Sales on the West Coast for FHM Magazine. It was the only job I could get out of college and she would take me out with her to pitch and entertain her clients and that was my first exposure. I remember thinking back then this is the goal. It felt really aspirational and I love that there was an element of entertaining people and being able to incorporate basic everyday life appointments into that entertaining. So I focused on building a career from there in sales and it just kind of worked out!

Talk us through your creative process. Where do you start?

Our creative process at Poosh stems from us being a small team and we’re all so close so we love collaborating and talking through ideas collectively. We all have great, big ideas. So sometimes I might have a big concept that I think works really well for one of my clients and then the team will get on a brainstorm call and everyone ends up putting in their two cents and we all help make the idea bigger and it comes to life. The more you communicate and talk internally the more colour I am able to add to these programs for our brand partners and help them come to life in such an amazing way.

Poosh is all about embracing a “modern lifestyle”. What does this mean for you personally?

Modern lifestyle for me and for Poosh is living a healthy life of balance and still enjoying yourself and having fun. I don't take anything that I am doing too seriously. I am still young enough and I want to have fun and let loose and enjoy and splurge. But I am also very focused on my skincare, physique, and being the healthiest I can be. It’s really all about moderation.

What’s been the single most crucial tool or strategy you’ve used to further your career?

I think the single most useful tool I’ve used and one of my number one things is listening before speaking and being able to kind of be who they want you to be or share what they want you to share. It’s all very malleable and being a good salesperson is never letting hearing ‘no’ stop you in a business sense. Even if you do hear the word ‘no’, you can always find a way to find budget or make things work. Fun fact, this is also one of Kris Jenner’s pieces of advice.

What’s been the best thing that’s happened to you since you started your career?

I’ve loved all the phases of my career but I really love where I am at now working with two of my oldest best friends, Kourtney and our Chief Content Officer, Sarah Howard and building a team. My kids are older and need me a little bit less so this is really the highlight of my career right here – working and being so heavily a part of building Poosh since day one.

Do you have a single piece of advice you’d give to your younger self or someone looking to pursue a similar line of work?

With these relationships you build as a salesperson, you develop friendships and relationships with these clients all the time. But you should never rule somebody out because they move to a new company or role because you never know where they’re going to land. A lot of these relationships that I have now have been lifelong. Stay in touch with people, don’t lose connections, and it’ll always come back to serve you.

Now, the home stuff. How long have you lived in your home?

Oh god…too long…ha. No, I’ve lived in the house for just about 11 years.

How did you initially know this was the space for you?

My husband and I were moving from a two-bedroom condo into our first single-family home. This home had all the bedrooms for a growing family in a family-centric neighbourhood. It felt like a home I could see my kids growing up in and loving being part of this neighbourhood.

Did you do any renovations or make any big changes after moving in?

I did a minor remodel when we first moved in…redoing some bathrooms, renovating the bathroom, and painting and what not back then. 10 years later in 2021, we did our full remodel where we gutted the entire inside and basically did a new build from the inside. It’s essentially an entirely new home but we’re still in the same space. It was an exhausting and draining, but a very fulfilling experience and much more affordable than moving to an entirely new home.

What was the thought process behind the way you’ve styled the interior?

I really wanted it to feel clean and very warm and cosy but also a little bit modern. I wanted to create a place where all my friends, and my three kids, and my kid’s friends all want to spend time at that was great for entertaining and chic and cool but also inviting. I definitely was influenced by Amber Interiors. I learned about so many new furniture designers that I never heard of. There’s ways to do your home and not break the bank by working with places like Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn, but still having very unique and elevated pieces.

What are your favourite pieces in the home?

My sofa from Crofthouse is my absolute favourite. It’s not the most comfortable as I definitely bought it for looks but it’s still such a special piece that my family loves. Our bed from Maiden Home is also one of my favourites. It’s low to the ground with a beautiful headboard. I love the feeling of not being so elevated, it’s the perfect height.

Do you have any special décor you’re looking to add?

I don’t have a lot more space, and I am finally close to being done. But at this point, if I was to buy anything it’d probably be more art and things for my walls. I don’t have anything over my bed yet but I didn’t feel like I needed to rush this – I can wait til I find the right thing.

I did everything slowly but made sure when we moved in it would be liveable and not feel like an empty space. Actually, one thing I do want to do is my staircase which right now is very bare. Before the remodel, I had photos leading up the staircase and I want to bring that back into this home. But that’s quite the project and I am still recovering from the remodel, ha so will need a little more time before I tackle that.

Do you have any projects coming up you want to talk about?

I am so excited to share that I am working on Poosh’s second-ever Camp Poosh experience which will be a bigger and better version of what we did last year and align with Coachella Weekend One in April 2023. It’ll be a 4-day influencer event and experience in Palm Desert and we’re pulling out all the stops and I cannot wait to see how it all unfolds for our clients and it’s just such an amazing moment for the Poosh brand!
