How to Mix the Old and the New at Home for a Cosy, Lived-in Look

It's all about balance and unison for this trending aesthetic.

Mixing and matching different design styles is no mean feat. But when done correctly, particularly when pairing old and new decor, it can create an interesting home with plenty of personality that looks as though it has evolved over the years.

Perhaps you've found yourself in a situation where you've inherited family heirlooms but you have modern pieces in your home, or maybe you can't decide between the two styles.

Either way, we're sharing how you can successfully mix the old with the new to create the 2023 trend of the 'lived-in' look. There's no reason why a modern home can't be decorated with antique furniture and vice versa!

Don't be scared to break the rules

First and foremost, your home should be a curation of things you truly love. Blending modern trends with inherited pieces that have sentimental value or thrifted finds is what makes a home unique.

Create unison with colour

An easy rule to follow when mixing-and-matching styles is to follow a colour scheme. This will create unity and help blend the different styles together more seamlessly. You could stick to a neutral palette throughout or use the same accent tones from room to room.

Balance is key

Mixing old and new pieces can work if there is the right balance in the space. If there are too much of one style – particularly modern – and then random elements thrown in it can look a bit chaotic. Distribute pieces within a space so that they aren’t grouped in their periods or styles and try to create a balance between the number of old versus new items.

Use plenty of textures and layering

If you live in an older home with features such as rustic beams, timber floors, stone walls, or patterned tiles, balance those original features with shiny metallics, mixed textiles, soft furnishings, and modern art. Go vice versa if you have a modern home.

To create a more relaxed feel for that 'lived-in' look add natural textures like faux fur, wool, and linen to create a more relaxed feel. To elevate the space further and achieve a cosy atmosphere, layer throws and cushions and incorporate a range of lamps.

Use modern, functional versions of antique decor

To achieve an old meets new aesthetic you don't necessarily need literal old things. Some items e.g. record players can be designed in such a way that looks antique or retro with a modern twist, and actually functions better. Much the same goes with lighting. Designers like Anthony D'argenzio have created beautiful vintage-looking pieces that have been brought into the 21st century.

Statement pieces

If you're wanting to create maximum impact in a modern space with an antique/vintage piece, opt for a large-scale statement item like a gilded mirror, armoire, dining table, rug, sofa, or bed frame. The contrast and juxtaposition of the statement piece will create a focal point or a sense of drama. You can bring them into the 21st century by refreshing paint, polishing timber, or adding new upholstery.
