From Japandi to shizen and wabi-sabi: Discover our edit of the nine best Japanese interior design accounts on Instagram to add some inspiration to your feed.
From Japandi to shizen and wabi-sabi: Japanese interior design has long held a reputation for creating spaces that foster calm from the inside out.
And with many of us looking to boost the serenity quotient in our homes — and travel to Japan vastly increasing in the last year — it’s perhaps no surprise that Japanese-inspired interiors have been gaining popularity on social media.
Naturally, Instagram is a goldmine for Japanese decorators, architects and DIY creators showing us how it's done. Below, keep reading for our round-up of some of the best accounts to follow for all the Japanese interior inspiration you need.
1. @neie_architects
Neie Architects is a studio based in Nagoya, Japan, best known for its minimalist interiors. Proponents of shizen style — a philosophy promoting the purposeful integration of nature into one’s space — their builds are brimming with organic woods, elegant windows and thoughtfully placed greenery.
2. @keijiashizawadesign
Headed up by architect and designer Keiji Ashizawa, this Tokyo-based studio’s page is a dreamy mood board of Japandi style. Driven to cultivate a sense of calm in busy urban centres, there’s a clear focus on natural materials and clean lines contrasted with carefully placed curves throughout their projects.
3. @providerhousehobart
Sydneysiders might know Provider Store, an artfully curated shop in Surry Hills founded by Tara Bennett. Provider House in Hobart is her next lovingly-executed project, a retreat offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Every inch of the property is designed for serenity, from the Washi paper lamps to the ryokan-inspired cedar bathtub. We loved its unique blend of Japanese-inspired design and Tasmanian charm so much that we even shot the campaign for our new Forest range of bedding there!
4. @ichijo_toma
Specialising in house renovations, architectural agency Ichijo Toma is dedicated to “living with the comfortable beauty of Japan”. Applying Japanese wisdom to the necessities of modern life, expect to see a lot of classically structured Japanese homes enhanced with traditional materials, such as tatami and washi paper.
5. @shikasan_kumasan
If you love a bit of DIY, you’ll want designer and content creator Shikasan Kumasan in your Instagram feed. Living in a 20-year-old home passed down from his grandparents, he’s mindfully renovating the space to capture a moody, wabi-sabi spirit and sharing all his DIY tricks along the way.
6. @rika__________________
Multi-hyphenate Rika — she’s an advertising agency director, content creator and heads up a renovation studio — is a must-follow for studio apartment inspiration. Besides being a stylish example of solo living in Tokyo, she also shares snippets of her design projects and inspiring interiors around the city.
7. @tsubaki_tokyo
While not strictly an interiors account, Tsubaki’s grid is a one-stop spot for beautiful Japanese botanical arrangements showcased both indoors and outdoors. Founders Keishi Miyahara and Ikuko Yamashita draw inspiration from Japan’s natural beauty, making sculptural arrangements and garden installations to create an experience of nature in urban spaces.
8. @aman_kyoto
For classic Japanese aesthetics with a contemporary flair, the Aman Kyoto Resort’s Instagram page is ripe for décor ideas. Adopting a minimalist take on the traditional Japanese ryokan (inn), glimpse the guest suites panelled in light Japanese ash, the bathrooms that revolve around a huge hinoki timber bath, the raku tile panels of the Living Pavilion, and the recessed tokonoma alcoves. And that’s just for starters.
9. @takashi_okuno_and_associates
Inspired by Sukiya-style architecture (a residential style associated with elegant Japanese tea houses), this architectural firm’s account is overflowing with homes that encapsulate its spirit. Think delicate proportions, natural materials and the considered convergence of indoor and outdoor areas.
10. @hankuradesign
Hiroshima-based duo Masafumi and Sumire Shimatani from Hankura Design work on spaces in just about every sphere, from salons to innovative offices and homes. What’s common among all of their projects, however, is their shizen-style approach to aesthetics. Hit follow for unassuming living spaces that flow into courtyards, swathes of wood with depth and dimension, and bedrooms that mimic the hues of the surrounding outdoors.
