The artist has created four serene artworks exclusively for Bed Threads.
Since 2017, Bed Threads has championed the work of inspiring creatives, whose dazzling and provocative works offer new windows into the world of art. Belgium-born artist Isabelle Vandeplassche is one such artist whose works we have admired over the years.
Isabel is an illustrator and designer living in Ericeira, Portugal. Her dreamy works capture the beauty of small moments and illustrate images of summer landscapes, infinite beaches, lush jungles, and Mediterranean delicacies. The artworks evoke memories of bright afternoons and balmy evenings by the ocean.
In an exciting collaboration with Bed Threads, she turns her eye to aesthetic interior scenes in a series of four exclusive prints. Each print can hang on its own or be paired with any or all of the others.
To celebrate the launch of our exclusive collaboration with Isabelle, we spoke to the artist about her creative process and how art relates to her personality and who she is.
Hi Isabelle! We're so excited to have your artwork at Bed Threads. Can you tell us how your art relates to your personality and who you are?
Hi! Thank you for having me. My work often involves a serene and calm feeling which reflects my personality as I am a more introverted person. I love being surrounded by nature and pretty interiors which also inspire my work.
What was the inspiration behind this collection of artworks?
I created a collection of artworks that include interiors. I have always been interested in interior design and architecture. Since my partner and I are renovating a house I thought it would be fun to use this as the main inspiration.
Tell us about your career journey to date. Did you always know you wanted to pursue this line of work?
I have always been a creative person busy making things. It was always a dream to work for myself but at first, I could not imagine making a living from my art. In 2016, I started posting my paintings on Instagram. All of this evolved naturally. My account kept growing and companies started to ask for commissions such as package design and pattern designs. I worked on those jobs after my full-time day job. I started to really love the thought of drawing for a living and working on my own business. So I took the jump! Now I feel very lucky to be able to do what I really love.
What motivates you to create?
Making art can make me forget the time and give me a sense of calm. I really love the thought that you can just start with a blank paper with an idea and little by little you create something completely new. With my work, I like to awaken the mind and want to bring a little bit of happiness to the daily life of people.
Talk us through your creative process. Where do you start?
Usually, I have a few ideas in mind. I look through inspiring photos that are either taken by me, images online or in books and magazines. I create a colour palette consisting of natural colours that match the feel of the painting and start to make a sketch. I then start to paint and when the hand-painted part is done I scan everything and edit the art digitally.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
There are many! But among my favourites are Milton Avery, Pierre Boncompain, Hockney, and Matisse.
Can you tell us a bit about why you think art is important to society?
I think art is an important way of self-expression. It frees our minds and makes us explore another world through colours and cultures. Without art, life would be pretty dark and boring.
