8 Tired Trends That Are So Over In 2023
Ditch these outdated trends for fresh faves.
If you’re planning some home improvements this New Year, it pays to know what’s in and what’s out. The good news is that the interiors world is less fickle than its fashion counterpart, but there are trends which subtly take place. Millennial pink? Over, apparently. So are bathtubs - according to search intel from Pinterest. Take these suggestions with a pinch of salt of course (but don’t come blubbing if you regret those black taps in six months). Keep reading to find out what’s hot on everyone’s searches.
1. Ditch millennial pink for Magenta
In case you missed the memo, the colour gods at Pantone have decreed that magenta (or technically, ‘Viva Magenta’) is the shade of pink to covet now. Vibrant, optimistic and certainly not one for wallflowers, this rebellious hue pairs elegantly with khaki and shades of pale blue.
2. Ditch wood panelling for cork
Did you know that cork is actually carbon-negative? This wonder material, which you can use to line floors and walls (it makes a great home office pinboard) is made using harvested bark, so no trees are ever felled in production. A harvested cork tree absorbs three to five times more CO2 than non-harvested trees, so by switching, you’re actually doing the planet a favour.
3. Ditch your tub for a spa shower
Blame it on Gwyneth, but suddenly it’s all about large, indulgent showers over a long, hot soak, “thanks to a global push towards water conservation and the need for increased floor space,” according to Pinterest. Searches year on year for ‘amazing shower walk-ins’ are up 395%, with ‘home spa bathroom’ rising by 190%.
4. Ditch static lamps for portable lighting
…and say farewell to unsightly cables in the process. Rechargeable and lightweight, these mini lamps are a low-commitment solution to lighting up a dark nook for an evening read, or amplifying dressing-table light when doing make-up. Even better, they come in styles and prices to suit everyone.
5. Ditch matchy-matchy for eclecticism
Another movement both Pinterest and insiders are noting is a move away from fast furniture - much like fast fashion. With an emphasis on craft or vintage, the focus is on the slow or old. From junk shop finds to family heirlooms, this is an easy and sustainable trend to get on board with. The term ‘mixing modern and antique furniture’ is up 530% on Pinterest.
6. Ditch limewash for ombre
We’ve had ombre hair, and nails… now the trend is setting its sights on our walls. Soothing, pleasing and less messy than grappling with a brush and a tin of paint, a feature wall in this effect promises to deliver maximum impact.
7. Ditch florals for fungi
Yes, really. In a trend Pinterest calls ‘weirdcore’, this is mushroom decor and fantasy art’s moment in the spotlight; searches for ‘’fantasy mushroom art’ are up 70%. Think mushroom lamps and toadstool ornaments. Basically anything that’s got a fungi-loving spirit (geddit?).
8. Ditch black hardware for bronze
Obviously, don’t rip out all your hardware or sanitaryware, but if you are embarking on a renovation, consider this softer alternative to black. Interiors insiders rate it for the way it doesn’t rust and resists metal fatigue. Sounds like a winner in our book.
