TikTok Made Us Do It: 11 Space-Saving Hacks for Your Small Home
From raising your curtains to multifunctional furniture, here's how to make the most out of your petite space
Living in a small home has its challenges. There's less storage space and you'll likely need to maximise every inch of real estate.
But there are also plenty of advantages to living in a smaller home. You’ll be spending less on electricity and repairs, you can splurge on higher-quality items because there’s less to buy, and there's also less for you to clean each week.
In order to make the most of your small space, you'll probably want to have a few design solutions in place. We've rounded up 11 space-saving hacks from TikTok that will make living in a small home easier, more functional, and more organised.
1. Closet management
Having enough space for your clothes is an issue many of us face when living in a smaller home, particularly those living in apartments in big cities. In this TikTok @smallspacebiglife shares a few suggestions for making the most of your closet.
- Opt for thin coat hangers to maximise hanging space.
- Use dividers to section off different items so you don't have to sort through clothes.
- Roll don't fold your clothes.
- Take advantage of any small gaps to store items like belts.
- Utitilise under the bed storage for the clothes that aren't in season.
2. Hang your paper towel
Kitchen counter space is precious real estate in a small home. Having too many appliances on these surfaces will make it tricky to cook and make your space look messy. Another item that will make this space look messy is your paper towel roll that's sitting out. If you need it accessible often, consider hanging it from underneath one of your kitchen cabinets as shown in this TikTok by @thefurnitureplug.
3. Multifunctional furniture
Furniture items that have multiple functions are one of the most impactful ways you can save space in your home. This could be a coffee table that also has storage so items that need to be put away can be in an easily accessible place, a dining table that also functions as your working desk, sofa beds, a bookshelf with a pull-down desk, or a bed with hidden storage.
4. Showers instead of baths
It's unlikely you'll have space for a separate shower and bath. If you're in the process of designing a bathroom, it's worth just opting for the shower. You could do a shower/bath combo but this will take up significantly more space.
5. Minimal colour palette
Sticking to a pared-back colour palette that flows throughout your home will help it look cohesive and not chaotic.
6. Built-in closets with mirrors
These are a game-changer and help make your room look much larger than it is and more open. This is because light reflects off the glass and back into the space.
7. Raise your curtains
Even if your windows don't hit the ceiling, hanging your curtains closer to the ceiling will make your room look grander than it is. Opting for sheer blinds is also a good idea to let light in while also retaining privacy.
8. Invisible clothesline
Air drying your clothes and linen is preferable, but outdoor clotheslines aren't an option and storing clothes hoists take up space. Installing an invisible clothesline that you can quickly assmble when you need will save space and look tidier than clothes hoists.
9. Paint your walls white
White paint will help make a room feel open, clean, and spacious.
10. Mount your furniture
Whether it's your hallway side table, a fold-out wall desk or bedside tables, mounting furniture will free up some floor space, utilise vertical space, and generally make your space look bigger than it is.
11. Use battery lightbulbs
You don't need to do this with all lights, but lamps are great to get battery lightbulbs for as you won't have the mess of cables throughout your home. This will also free up a bit of floor space.
