Home Styling Tips We Learnt from Our Viral ‘The Makers’ Home Tour
Ellie Watson's sun-filled Gold Coast home captured worldwide attention, and here's why.
After gaining over 350,000 views on Instagram, Ellie Watson’s sun-filled home on Queensland’s Gold Coast took the crown as one of Bed Threads’ most popular home tours – and for good reason.
The recipe creator and Wholesome Store founder welcomed us into her home earlier this year, for an exclusive look at the space dubbed ‘The Valle Casa’, where Ellie’s vision of a modern Australian family home has come to life.
For anyone looking to create a space as idyllic as Ellie’s, or simply wish to learn more about her home, we’ve gathered the top styling tips we learnt from touring ‘The Valle Casa’.
1. Natural light is a priority
There’s no shortage of natural light in Ellie Waton’s Gold Coast home. From the breathtaking round skylight that soars above the dining table in the entrance way to the sprawling glass doors which line the lime washed walls, sunlight knows no bounds in 'The Valle Casa'. This emphasis on natural light before, during, and after the build has resulted in a space which feels warm and inviting, capturing the essence of family living in Australia.
2. Keep it simple
Void of busy wallpapers, vibrant carpet, and flashy textiles, Ellie’s home is beautifully simple. Honing in on the beauty of the natural textures such as marble, stone, and linen, Ellie’s pared back approach to styling allows the home to feel elevated and balanced. Ellie's decision to keep the home’s design and styling uncomplicated gives her the ability to experiment with different pieces of furniture and artworks with ease.
3. Neutrals and colours can coexist
There’s an unspoken rule – that Ellie has proven it can (and should) be broken – that home styling either goes down a neutral or colourful path. Ellie's has chosen to meld these two worlds in different rooms; paring ivory marble atop cream-toned floors with Mineral, Sage and Olive linens, and lime washed walls with burgundy boucle and mustard velvet. This considered 'clashing' of varying tones and textures results in a space that doesn't prescribe to a certain style, which feels both lived-in and elevated.
4. Art can tie a space together
Ellie has created breathtaking focal points in different areas of the home with artworks created by some of her favourite artists. The green abstract Bonnie Gray piece front and centre in Ellie’s living room not only serves as a stunning eye-catcher for guests of the home, but also an effective styling tool which helps the other pieces of furniture and decor to complement each other.
5. Function stays front of mind
Balancing both beauty and function, Ellie’s home serves a beautiful representation of herself, her family, and her brand. Having built the home from the ground up, Ellie was able to thoughtfully design each room to suit the needs of everyone that lives there, while also staying true to Ellie's personal style and aesthetic. An example of this balance can be seen in the open-plan kitchen, which appears fairly minimal and elevated, but beyond the marble island is a concealed butler's pantry which is fully equipped with the family’s cooking and cleaning essentials.
