5 Elevated Christmas Tree Decoration Ideas That Are Designer-Approved
Bring festive cheer into your home with these stylish looks.
Decorating a Christmas tree could be considered an art form. It’s the pièce de résistance of your holiday décor and serves as the backbone of your seasonal aesthetic.
But whether you’re decorating a Christmas tree for the first time or simply refreshing your look, deciding on your “theme,” so to speak, can be a bit overwhelming. There’s selecting the tree itself, plus deciding on a colour palette, investing in the basics like bulbs and garland, and selecting flourishes like specialty ornaments, ribbons, a tree topper, and filler picks in the form of feathers, florals, berry sprays, and the like.
To help kick off your design brainstorm, we’ve curated a list of elevated Christmas tree decoration ideas, courtesy of designers. From festive to minimalist, find five of our favourite holiday aesthetics for 2022.
1. All natural everything
This increasingly popular Scandinavian-inspired tree aesthetic is all about the natural elements; you can even forage a few pieces from your yard! Take notes from this minimalist tree with its patterned ornaments in brown, white, and soft gold. Bring the look full circle with neutral gift wrapping in whites, browns, and tans.
2. Festive traditional
There’s something so warm and inviting about a traditional red and green Christmas tree. This timeless look subscribes to a “more is more” philosophy, complete with tinsel, shiny red, gold, green, and silver bulbs, nutcracker ornaments, Santa figurines, and a brilliant star topper, a la designer Josh Young. Carry the festive look throughout your home with printed wrapping paper, holly-flecked mantel garland, poinsettias, and plenty of wreaths.
3. Colourful whimsy
The whimsical Christmas aesthetic has gained momentum in the last decade, and we’re here for the colourful, rule-bending aesthetic. Take Denmark-based designer blogger Sofie K. S. Boisen’s tree, for example. She steps outside of the box with emerald, pink, magenta, and yellow bulbs that complement her pastel walls. Complete the look with decorative tchotchkes that make your heart sing — think faux flowers, beaded ornaments, sewn baubles, and more. The quirkier, the better!
4. Elegant and understated
Leave it to designer Athena Calderone to curate a perfectly minimalist Christmas tree. The creative behind Eye Swoon went with incandescent and white bulbs, a few snowflake ornaments, and a linen tree skirt for an understated look. Complete with white faux fur stockings white throw pillows, and a cosy tonal blanket, the perfect snowy look.
5. Black and gold
If your home is brimming with marble accents, low-slung furniture, and tonal abstract artwork, a Christmas tree with vintage touches will round out your aesthetic. Embrace a black and gold colour palette à la designer Ines Kelly Mazzotta, complete with striped garland, checkered ornaments, and ornate frame-style pieces. Add warmth and texture with a few floral touches and some festive flock.
