15 Carry-On Essentials That Will Make Flying Easier

These items are a must for long-haul flights.

Flying, especially long-haul routes, is the least fun part of a holiday and an anxiety-inducing activity for many. Sitting in the same spot for hours on the end is only made better by having the right things easily accessible to you.

With countless check-in bags going missing now that travel is back on the cards and airports are understaffed, it’s well worth having a thoughtfully packed carry-on bag that you will have with you at all times.

Having these items in your hand luggage will increase the likelihood of you having as comfortable a flight as possible and a wonderful holiday even if your baggage goes missing.

1. Change of clothes

Having a change of clothes is a must in your carry-on bag. It's great for when you start feeling less-than-fresh on a long-haul flight and more importantly for instances where your check-in luggage gets lost and you at least have one other outfit to rely on. Opt for something lightweight and practical.

2. Throw

Planes always end up being just that bit cooler than you expected and having a blanket to wrap around you will make the journey all the more comfortable.

3. Valuables

The most important things to have with you at all times are your Passport, ID, travel documents, cash, and bank cards. If these are in your check-in luggage and that go missing, you won't be going very far on your holiday. Any other valuable items like fine jewellery or expensive tech should also be accessible to you at all times.

4. Noise-cancelling headphones

From screaming babies to noisy air conditioning, planes are loud, and when you're trying to watch a movie or have a nap noise-cancelling headphones can really save the day. We're big fans of Sony's noise-cancelling headphones.

5. Compression socks

Compression socks can keep your legs from getting tired and achy and prevent you from getting blood clots from sitting for extended periods. They can also ease swelling in your feet and ankles and keep your feet warm on a cold plane.

6. Disinfectant wipes or hand sanitiser

Planes aren't the cleanest of places and having something to disinfect your area, especially the armrests and fold-down tray table, will help you feel that extra bit cleaner.

7. A day or two of toiletries

You don't need to go overboard here, but having a day or two of toiletries will help keep you fresh. Just ensure that everything is under 100ml. If you're concerned about liquids leaking, remove the cap from the bottle, place a small square of plastic wrap over the opening, and place the cap back on. Consider packing:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Moisturiser, lip balm, and eye drops to stay hydrated.
  • Deodorant
  • Hairbrush/comb

8. A portable battery charger

You might want to bring an external battery so you can charge your electronics. Most likely you will need a portable charger as batteries can go flat very easily especially when constantly in use on a long-haul flight.

9. Pre-downloaded entertainment

The disappointment of opening Spotify or Netflix only to realise you forgot to pre-download music, podcasts, and movies is significant. Here's your reminder to download some entertainment before you jump on the plane.

10. Eye mask

Having an eye mask to shield your eyes from the sunlight or the person next to you's reading light might be the difference between being able to sleep and not.

11. Face mask

Self-explanatory in 2022, but ensuring you have a mask with you to suppress the transmission of illnesses and potentially save lives should be a priority for everyone.

12. Neck pillow

Unless you're flying business class, the headrests in economy just don't cut it as far as comfort goes. Having a neck pillow will provide that extra bit of comfort to hopefully help you snooze and limit neck pain.

13. Daily medications

Any medications that you need to take on a daily basis are essential to pack. It's also worth carrying anti-nausea meds, paracetamol, Ibuprofen, antihistamine tablets, and throat lozenges.

14. Pen

Many of us forget to take a pen on a flight and only realise we need one when it's time to fill out the customs forms before landing. Make efficient use of your time by filling out the arrival card before you deplane.

15. Snacks

In case you don’t like airplane food, would like healthier options, or you just want extra snacks to get you through the flight, it's worth packing your own little treats. Chewing gum is also a good idea and it doubles as a helper for ears and sinuses to clear.
