10 Things You Should (and Shouldn't) Do During a Full Moon

Full Moon rituals can help manifest your goals and desires, but they can cause chaos when used incorrectly. Here's what you should and shouldn't do...

Full Moons (especially when they're Supermoons) can be the most powerful astrological events. But unlike Mercury retrogrades, they're not prone to causing chaos; instead, full Moons are known to be dynamic times filled with manifestation, culmination and self-realisation. They invite us to take a minute and reflect on what’s working (or not) in our lives – whether that’s in relation to work, relationships or health – and proceed with change if necessary.

A simple way to take advantage of this astrological event is by incorporating full moon rituals in your daily routine. Moon rituals are all about harnessing the unique power of the Moon at certain points in the lunar cycle to help in manifesting your desires. It might sound a bit whacky but since full moons are all about endings, these rituals are really just a great way to evaluate where you're at, assess each situation, cleanse your life and recharge your energy levels. However, when these rituals are used incorrectly, they can stir up emotions and provoke strange behaviour.

Interested? Here’s everything you need to know about the effects of full Moons, and the full Moon rituals you should and shouldn’t do.

How does a full Moon affect you?

Interesting fact: the word “lunatic” came from the idea that changes in mental state were related to the lunar cycle. This dates back as early as 400B.C., when physicians and philosophers began to blame behavioural changes on the pull of the moon.

The possibility that humans could be affected by the moon’s cycles isn’t entirely foolish. In fact, one study says nearly 81 per cent of mental health professionals believe a full Moon can make people ill.

According to various studies pointed out by Healthline, a full Moon may have the potential to affect your sleeping patterns, blood pressure, your mood and mental health.

What are the best full Moon rituals?

According to astrologer Natasha Weber, her number one recommendation when it comes to full Moon rituals is to focus on two specific elements

“Given that La Luna governs your body’s fluids and emotional landscape, rituals that are positively associated with water or expressing your feelings are perfectly suited to a full Moon,” she tells Bed Threads Journal.

“Run a warm bath and add some aromatherapy oils that align with the full Moon’s zodiac sign. Ten, create a beautiful sanctuary in honour of that zodiac sign.”

For example, if the Moon is in earth sign Libra, run yourself a bath with essential oils, salts or petals and/or crystals.

Weber also recommends meditating. “Meditate on what you need to manifest and then write them down in your journal."

Find a nice place to sit still and take deep breaths as you reflect on what has been going well in your life, as well as any goals you are still yet to achieve. Be with your thoughts for as long as you need.

Other full Moon rituals to adopt for manifestation and energy cleansing include:

  • Charging your crystals
  • Dancing to release energy
  • Lighting a candle
  • Smudging with sage
  • Starting a gratitude journal

What are the biggest full Moon ritual mistakes?

Weber explains this in astrological terms: “The full Moon marks the halfway point between the Moon’s cycle. It is the end of the waxing phase and the beginning of the waning phase. This means that the seeds of intention planted during the new Moon have grown to their fullest potential. The Moon is in full bloom and is ready to begin its waning phase, where a ‘letting go’ process begins until the new Moon starts another fresh cycle.”

So, given that a full Moon represents the peak of the lunar cycle, new beginnings aren’t supported at this time.

“Launching new projects or kicking off new relationships aren’t ideal,” she warns.

“When journaling, a full Moon better supports manifesting and bringing something to fruition rather than setting new intentions.”
