Bed Threads' Global PR Manager Starts Her Day at 6 am

As a mother of twins and successful career woman, there’s not a moment to waste in Meg Hutchinson’s morning routine.

We’ve heard about CEOs' morning routines with gruelling workouts followed by ice baths, we've seen the ‘clean girl’ morning routines plastered all over our For You Pages, but what are the people we know personally doing every morning?

Being the Global PR & Partnerships Manager at Bed Threads is by no means a breezy job; add three-year-old twins and a moodle puppy named Pepper into the mix and you’ve got yourself a jam-packed day ahead of you. For Meg Hutchinson, this is life, and she’s shared with us how she navigates her mornings and what keeps her going when she’s too tired to function.

Hi Meg! Welcome to the Bed Threads Team Morning Routine Series! Can you tell us a little bit about what you do at Bed Threads?

Thank you for having me! I’m the Global PR & Partnerships Manager, so my role is to lead the strategy and implementation of PR across all markets. Essentially, I handle securing media coverage, influencer marketing, and partnerships with other brands and publishers.

What time do you typically wake up? Can you walk us through your morning routine?

I usually wake up around 6 am each day. In an ideal world, I’d wake up before my 3-year-old twins and enjoy a slow start to the morning, though more often than not one or both of my little alarm clocks wake me up by coming into my bed for some cuddles. I make myself a coffee and all of us some breakfast, then ABC Kids babysits them while I shower, get myself ready for the day and skim-read any emails that have come through from other markets overnight. I help my kids dress themselves and brush their teeth, and we’re out the door around 7:30 am. I get our moodle puppy, Pepper, and I walk them all to daycare just down the road, then back again ready to start the work day.

What are some essentials you can’t start your day without?

Coffee! It’s a cliché but I can’t start my day without one. I’m also big on scraping my tongue, doing my skincare routine and making my bed every morning.

What do you typically eat for breakfast to kickstart your day?

I try to start every day with some protein to keep my hormones in check, so it’s usually eggs with toast, avocado and spinach.

Is there anything aside from coffee that helps when you feel too tired to function?

Some gentle exercise and getting outside always makes me feel more energised and clear-headed when I’m tired. I’m lucky to live a block from the beach, so whenever I can fit it in, a lunchtime coastal walk helps me to avoid the afternoon slump.

Do you have any specific strategies to help you stay focused and motivated throughout the workday?

If I’ve got a really busy day ahead of me I like to time block – I’ll estimate how long each task will take and add them to my calendar, and assign a few chunks of time throughout the day for checking and answering emails. It stops me from procrastinating or getting distracted, and makes it all seem much more manageable. I also have a system for emails otherwise my inbox can seem overwhelming. If I can answer an email quickly I will do it right away, if I’m waiting on someone or something else before I can respond it goes into a folder, and if it requires some research or work to be done before I can respond it goes into another folder for when I can dedicate some time to it.
